The check

What we look at

The same things a printer checks before your job goes on the press, explained in plain words.

  • Size and bleed

Is the page the size you're printing, and does the artwork run far enough past the edge? We look at the pixels in the bleed, not just the settings.

  • Text near the edge

Text and logos too close to the cut line can be trimmed off. We show you exactly which ones.

  • Image quality

Photos below 300 ppi (150 ppi for large format) look soft in print. We measure every image at the size it will print.

  • CMYK and spot colours

We find RGB objects and spot colours that would print differently from what you see on screen.

  • Ink coverage

Too much ink in one spot smudges and sets off. We measure the total ink on every page with Ghostscript.

  • Fonts, lines and effects

Missing fonts, hairlines, white objects set to overprint and other details that go wrong on press.

Step by step

How it works

No software to install and no account needed to check.

  1. Upload your file

PDF with any number of pages, or a PNG, JPG, TIFF or SVG.

  2. Tell us about the job

Finished size, bleed, resolution and colours. All optional, with the usual print shop settings filled in.

  3. Read the report and fix

Each problem says what's wrong, why it matters and where it is on the page. Fix it in one click, or download the report as a text file.

Who it's for

Made for people who aren't print experts

  • Print shops and sign makers

Check customer files at the front desk in seconds, and show them exactly what needs changing.

  • Small businesses

Check your flyer, menu or business card before you pay for printing, so nothing comes back wrong.

  • Designers using Canva or Figma

These apps export for screens first. Find out what your printer will ask you to change before they ask.

Your file stays private

The check runs in your browser. Only the ink measurement and TIFF files need our server: a copy is sent over an encrypted connection and deleted as soon as it's been read. For TIFF files, we keep a PNG copy for a short time so you can pass it to a fix tool. Fixes run on our server too: the fixed file is kept for one day so you can download it, then deleted. We never use your files for anything else.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a preflight check?

It's the check a printer runs on a file before printing it: size, bleed, image resolution, colours, ink and fonts. Doing it yourself first means fewer rejected files and fewer reprints.

Is the check really free?

Yes. Checking a file is free and needs no account. Fixing a file with one of our tools uses credits, so you'll need an account for that.

Which files can I check?

PDF files with any number of pages (we check up to the first 100), and PNG, JPG, TIFF and SVG images, up to 100 MB.

What does “Not determined” mean?

It means we couldn't measure that point for this file, for example text inside a flat image or the ink of an RGB file. It isn't a failure, but it's worth checking by eye or asking your printer.

What settings should I choose?

Use what your printer asks for. If you don't know, the defaults are the most common: 3 mm (1/8 in) bleed, 300 ppi for normal print, 150 ppi for posters and banners, CMYK and a 300% ink limit.

Do you keep my files?

No. Most of the check happens in your browser. For the ink measurement (PDFs and CMYK images) and for TIFF files, a copy is uploaded and deleted as soon as it's been read. A TIFF also gets a temporary PNG copy, used only if you pass it to a fix tool.
